Algaecides

AgriTec

Printable Informational Handout

Treats:

Pond treatments are typically calculated on the basis of three feet of water depth, because algae tends to concentrate in the top three feet of water. Three feet of water per acre of pond is approximately 1,000,000 gallons of water. Rates of AgriTec for control of algae are in the range of 1 gallon per 1,000,000 gallons of water treated – so 1 gallon per acre – but can vary depending on algal species. ready to use.

Application Rate:

Application Rates for Different Types of Algae
Blue-green algae
• Blue-green algae (cyanobacterial) blooms often appear as bright fluorescent green or pea soup-colored water
with a paint-like consistency on the surface but can also be reddish or brownish.
• Fine in texture and generally will not plug up irrigation systems if pumped.
• Blue-green algae can be toxic to livestock, people, and pets and should be carefully controlled.
• Usually controlled with 1-3 gal AgriTec per 1,000,000 gal of water.
• Re-treat with 1-3 gallon per acre at 4-week intervals based on regrowth.
Filamentous algae
• Several species.
• Appears as long, hair-like strands or filaments.
• Can plug intakes or screens and restrict irrigation in ponds.
• Use 2-4 gal AgriTec per acre of water depending on severity of the bloom..
• Re-treat with 2-4 gallons per acre at 2-4-week intervals based on regrowth.
If you don’t know what kind of algae you have
• Apply 2 gallons AgriTec per acre of water early in the spring.
• AgriTec will stay in solution while water is cool until algae starts to increase.
• AgriTec will be available to suppress algae populations as they appear.

Cutrine Plus Granular Algaecide
Treats:

Cutrine Plus Granular Algaecide is an algaecide from Applied Biocheists, capable of quickly clearing acres of troublesome bottom growing algae, particularly Chara, Nitella, Filamentous, and Hydrilla. When under control, algae is served a useful purpose in their environments, from stabilizing sediments to providing food for fish, birds, and other aquatic life. However, algae can grow out of control, interfering with recreational uses of the affected area as well as hurting the resident aquatic life. That is where Cutrine Plus Granular Algaecide comes in, offering 5 to 6 weeks of algae control. When treating the body of water, only treat 1/3 of the area at a time to avoid oxygen depletion of the water, which could be fatal to the fish population. Safe to use with no water use restrictions when used as directed on the label. Use Cutrine Plus for clear and clean water.

Also comes in the liquid form – Cutrine Plus Algaecide which is great for surface algae.

This one, the granular form, is ideal for bottom growing filamentous algae, Chara and Nitella. Liquid version must be diluted prior to use while the granular form is ready to use.

Cutrine Plus Liquid
Treats:

Cutrine-Plus is one of the most popular algaecides on the market today. It is a double-chelated copper solution effective against a wide variety of algal species. Due to its double-chelate, it stays in the water column longer, and in combination with its greater amount of activity in the plant can be much more effective. Cutrine-Plus is the only chelated copper algaecide that is patented on the market today.

Targets Algae: including Chara, Spirogyra, Cladophora, Vaucheria, Ulothrix, Microcystis, and Oscillatoria

Clarifiers

Alum - Aluminum Sulfate
Treats:

Use to clarify your pond water in areas with darker soil.

Application Rate:

Alum is the most effective treatment for clearing muddy water.  Application rates for alum are recommended at 25 to 50 pounds per acre-foot. The first treatment should be made at the rate of 25 pounds per acre-foot. Clay particles should begin settling within a few hours after mixing and applying the alum. If there is little noticeable change after one day, then a second application should be made at 25 pounds per acre-foot. Alum is most effective when dissolved in clear water and sprayed over the surface from shore or a boat. In large ponds, a dissolved solution of alum can be poured into the outboard motor wash of a small boat.

Alum can reduce the pH and alkalinity of pond water due to a strongly acidic reaction in water. For this reason, pH and alkalinity need to be tested before treatment with alum to prevent harmful effects on fish. Alkalinity should not be below 80 mg/l and pH should not be below 7.0. If readings are found to be below these levels, then sodium bicarbonate should be added at the same weight to weight ratio as aluminum sulfate.  This will help buffer the acidic effects of alum treatment.

Gypsum - Calcium Sulfate

Printable Informational Handout

Treats:

Used to clarify pond water in sandy soil areas; specifically does well in Poetry, Tx.

Application:

Agricultural gypsum. Calcium sulfate (CaSO4 2H20) can also be effective at removing suspended clay or soil but usually works much slower than Alum.  Recommended application rates range from 100 to 522 pounds per acre-foot of water depending upon the amount of suspended clay. It is best to first apply gypsum at the most conservative rate of 100 lbs/acre-foot, and allow a few days to pass while monitoring water clarity. If the pond has not cleared, apply additional gypsum until transparency reaches 18 inches or meets owner satisfaction. Gypsum should be applied by the same methods described for alum, although it has a neutral reaction in water and does not require simultaneous lime or bicarbonate treatment.
